The Palm Beach Draughstmen are hosting the 5th annual Hurricane Blowoff homebrew competition at the end of the month. Entries are due no later than March 25th at the Homebrewer's Outlet in West Palm Beach. If anyone is interested in volunteering, they are looking for judges and stewards. The awards ceremony will be held during a big party on April 1st. For complete details, go to the competition website. If anyone needs a printout of the entry forms, please contact me. If anyone would like to volunteer to make a trip up there to drop off beers, please post to the MASH list.
Congratulations to Jamie, Kevin, and everyone else at the Titanic for winning two ribbons at the 3rd Annual New Times Beer Fest in Fort Lauderdale. Titanic's Smokestack Millenium Porter took first place among domestic dark (colored) beers. Their Captain Smith's Rye Ale took third place among domestic light (colored) beers. There isn't much of the porter left, so if you'd like a glass get down to Titanic soon! We'll have a full report from those who attended as soon as your humble WebLackey receives one. Hint, hint...
The latest issue of Zymurgy showed up in the mailbox this week. National Homebrewer's Day is Saturday, May 6th this year. We usually have a picnic that day, so please try to free up your calendars...
A more accurate listing of the beers for the AHA Club Only competitions was also published in this issue. Please see the Competitions page for the details.
Pictures taken at this year's Coconut Cup have been posted to the Pictures page.
Congratulations to Joe Berryman! His CBS Dunkelweizen took third place at the Florida State Fair. Full results can be found here.
We've been asked to support a change to Florida's restrictive beer bottle laws (which only allow beer to be sold in 8, 12, 16, and 32 ounce containers). This petition shows your support of an effort to change these laws to allow beer to be sold in any size container up to 32 ounces in size. Please sign the petition and mail it in today. Please also get anyone else that you think might be interested to sign the petition. If you prefer to print the petition in MS Word format, please get it here.
Our illustrious leader has been rather busy dealing with his daughter's illness and with some house-repairs, so I've offered to write up this month's President's message. Please bear with me since I'm new at this...
I think the first order of business is to congratulate all of my fellow MASHers on the surprising upset victory in the Coconut Cup! We managed to keep FLAB from three-peating and had a great time doing it. Congratulations to all of the winners and thanks to those who worked so hard to make the Cup happen this year: Peter & Aviva for their tireless efforts in organizing the competition, Denise for keeping score, Joe for procuring the awards, all of the judges and stewards for judging and stewarding, Jeff at the HomebrewersWarehouse for accepting entries, and Kevin & Jamie for putting up with a bunch of homebrewers at the Titanic for the better part of a day. While entries were down this year, FLAB and MASH each had about an equal number of entries. We've got to be wary of those Palm Beach Draughstmen next year: they only had one entry, but it did very wellnearly taking best of show. Now if only that lazy WebLackey would get around to posting some pictures for all to see. I'll give him a kick the next time I see him.
Mark Swenson, the Swede himself, is leaving us soon to accept a new job out West. Congrats, Swede. We're looking for someone to take over as Treasurer. We've already "volunteered" someone for the job, but it might be good to have someone who isn't quite so reluctant. If anyone really wants to do it, let the board know, otherwise our "volunteer" is stuck...
This weekend is the Florida State Fair homebrew competition. Many thanks to the trio from Tampa Bay Beers and the Dunedin Brewer's Guild that came down to pick up our entries. Good luck to everyone who entered!
Friday the 25th is the New Times Beer Festival up in Broward county. Bob Fischer is trying to get a group together to go. Please contact him for details.
Our Past President and Coconut Cup Founder, Richard Pushaw, sent a message
out yesterday. He's got quite a three tiered brewery set up at his new place:
As you may be able to see, he's got a new license plate that will probably
be appearing in Zymurgy real soon now. When asked why his grass was
white, he blamed some new form of bacteria.
That's enough writing for now. If anyone has any news to post, please send it to me and I'll be happy to put it up here. If you haven't sent in your petition yet, what are you waiting for? Scott Graham
