PRESIDENTS MESSAGE FOR JULY 2006
None to start
What the hell three to read
I would like to say Happy Fourth of July to all our members,
family and friends.
230 years ago our forefathers started the barrels rolling so we can make
great beer in our homes and we do! But as MASH proved they did not make
the
best beers. This was evident by tasting the Poor Richards Ale that MASH
brewed for the Big Brew. The Poor Richards Ale taste was less then
stiller,
in some cases it down right sucked. MASH members at the June meeting
voted
for there favorite of the six different Poor Richards Ale with the
following results:
With 1728 Scottish yeast, one vote.
With 1335 British 2 yeast, zero votes.
With 1968 London ESB yeast, zero votes.
With 1028 London yeast with oak chips, three votes.
With 1098 British yeast with oak chips, three votes.
With 1187 Ringwood yeast, five votes.
We agreed that next year we would research the given recipe and make
changes or brew what we would prefer to drink. With that said I would
like
to thank all of you who brewed and fermented the PRA for the Big Brew.
Last months BOTY competition had three entries the style was BJCP
category
15 (German Wheat and Rye). The third place was a Weizen (15a) brewed by
Mark Kelly. The second place was a Roggenbier (15d) brewed by Darryl
Hickey. The drum roll please first place was a Dunkelwiezen (15b)
brewed by
Scott & Denise Graham, way to go!
This month the BOTY style is all categories of Mead. I will bet we will
have a good turnout for this competition, so reserve your designated
driver
and come down and judge some meads.
I am looking for one of our members to give a five minute talk on the
mead
styles guidelines. All interested parties contact me and I will help
with
information and handouts.
There has been a proposal to start a Florida State Home Brew Circuit
which
MASH is interested in being part of. Below is part of a statement that
was
sent out regarding the circuit. There will be many competitions changing
their dates and it will change the date that we hold the Coconut Cup. I
will be the representative for our club and will forward more
information
in the near future.
"The goal of the Florida State Home Brew Circuit is to promote quality
handcrafted beer, growth of all Florida homebrew competitions, addition
of
new competitions, and the crowning of the Florida Home Brewer of the
Year
and Florida Home Brew Club of the Year. In the process, we hope to put
Florida in the national spotlight for outstanding homebrews,
homebrewers,
and homebrew clubs."
The June meeting was pretty subdued due to the fact that all but two of
the
members that attained the June meeting had just returned from the
National
Homebrewers Conference. For the few that did not attend the National
Homebrewers Conference what happens at the conference stays at the
conference. Alright I will spill some of it; you see Bob Fischer had
this
blowup... Oh not that the seminars yes the seminars.
I need a beer right now hang on.
I am back. All I can say is it was an educational, fun and all around
great
time. Thanks goes to Scott and Denise for hosting the secret single malt
scotch tasting, how did you ever get that room clean? I would like to
thank
all of you for helping brew the beer, server the beer and drink some
beer.
THANK YOU!
Your Happy President
Darryl Jon Hickey
One to finish.
