President's Message for May
Two to write
Three to read
BIG BREW day is coming and we are gearing up to brew the Poor Richards Ale
recipe. Remember everyone needs to bring a dish of your favorite food. I
will be cooking up a pork shoulder in the la china box. Bring chairs,
lounge chairs, blanket or something to seat on. If anybody has any type of
portable shade please bring it, it is going to be a hot day. If you can
think of anything that will make for a memorable day then bring it. This
event will start at 09:00am on May 13.
The BOTY competition for April saw six entries, everything from a Pils to a
Smoked Porter. The competition was Extract brews with no style limitations.
Eric Johnson picked up a second and third place for his Pils and American
Barleywine respectively. Scott & Denise Graham took home the first place
with their American Brown. They are getting good mileage out of that beer
seeing how it took first place last month with the same beer. Job well done
to all the winners and entrants.
This months BOTY style is "Scottish and Irish Ale" BJCP category 9. This
style includes Scottish Light 60, Scottish Heavy 70, Scottish Export 80,
Irish Red Ale and Strong scotch Ale. These beers are fun and every
flavorful so put on your kilts and blast the bagpipe music and get brewing.
Erin Go Brew!
Start second beer or mead.
On the National Homebrew Conference front, the early enrolment ends May 15.
Which means the conference price goes up, so if your going get going.
Several members are brewing up a storm for the conference so we can serve
up a variety of good beers. We have to decide on a theme for Club night and
what food to serve, the theme and food should go together. So please think
about it and e-mail the suggestion to the group or me. I will be bugging
everybody about this so start thinking.
We have decided to have "The Guzzler" lapel pins made in time for summer.
This will help get our name out there at the National Homebrew Conference
and bring in a little money too. I know some of you do not understand what
a lapel pin is. It is a ¾ inch pin that goes on your jacket lapel. Ok you
can put them on shirt collars, T-shirts, hats and anything that you can
push a pin through.
Start third beer or mead.
April tech talk was a success with lots of beers bought to the meeting that
had a wide range of faults from a lot of diacetyl to mild phenolic. I hope
everybody learned a thing or two and may be you can use the knowledge in
the future. On to this months tech talk topic, drum roll please "Late Hop
Additions" what it does, what is and how to do it. The material is being
gathered. If someone would like to do the tech talk I will supply the
material otherwise you will have to listen to me talk for the whole
meeting. Come on and step up to the mug and volunteer.
The attendance at Aprils meeting was great so lets keep it up and we will
see all of you on May 22.
Keep your beer glass full, your kegs cold and your fermentors bubbling.
Slainte,
Darryl Jon Hickey
Still finishing the second to complete.
