COP4226 Assignment 4

Create an MDI Application

• On your system, create a data source for my Famous Quotes database. Please place this in a subdirectory of the root named cop4226. Edit the connection string and remove any references to the drive.

  Download the database into a directory named cop4226 in the root of the drive that you are on, and place the DB in that directory.

  There are two ways to create a new connection, they both take you to the same wizard.

  1. Use ServerExplorer to add a new Data Connection
  2. Drop an OleDbConnection onto your form and select the dropdown from the ConnectionString property. Select
     <New Connection>

  In the wizard, click on the Provider tab and use the
  Microsoft Jet 4.0 OLE DB Provider
  Clicking Next will allow you to browse for my database.

  After you have added the connection to your app, please edit the connection string and remove the reference to the drive you are on.

• Create a single instance MDI application.
  • If another instance is started, then open a new child in the single instance.
  • If another instance is started with a file name in the command line, then open a new child in the single instance with the indicated file opened.
• Add your HW3 doc/view/main to the application. Add other classes if you need them.
• I have modified SdiBaseSimple for an MDI application and renamed it MdiBaseSimple. Please get a new copy: MdiBaseSimple.
  1. There is no longer an Application Context, it is now just a simple class named MdiCOntext. It is almost identical to the old context.
  2. Do not use the MdiContext in the Main function when starting the application.
  3. The contexts in the view, doc and main form are no longer static. Each main form that is opened will have its own context and document.
• In the Main Form, create a new toolbar and status bar.
  • The toolbar should have buttons for New and Open.
    • If New is chosen, create a new child form that is the form from HW3.
    • If Open is chosen, open a dialog to choose a file to open. Open the saved file.
• In the Main Form, add a main menu
  • There will only be one menu: File
    • Add a subitem for New
    • Add a subitem for Open
    • Add a subitem for Exit
• In the Main Form, enable drag and drop so that a file can be dropped into the form and opened.
• Extra Credit: Create a dialog to be opened modally by the current view
  • Create a typed dataset for my Quote database.
  • Create a datagrid whose datasource is my Quote database.
  • Add three checkboxes for Author, Genre, and Quote. For each box that is checked, that column from the current selection in the datagrid will be added to the document when the dialog closes.
  • Add buttons for Add and Cancel
    • Cancel has the obvious meaning.
    • Add will act like OK, but if none of the checkboxes are checked, ask the user if they meant to do nothing. Only close the dialog if they meant to do nothing.
• When a view is created, start a thread
  • The thread will change the alignment of the most recently selected rectangle. It will change it from near to center to far to center, etc. Every second, it will change the alignment. First, it will set it to near, next it will set it to center, then it will set it to far, and then it will set it to center. This process will repeat as long as the thread is animated. The animation should be able to be paused at any time.
  • The animation can be paused by View Animate menu. If this menu option is checked, then animation should be enabled. If it is unchecked, then animation should pause.
  • The animation can be paused by the Animation icon. If the icon is toggled, then animation should be enabled. If the icon is untoggled, then animation should be disabled.
  • The  most recently selected is the most recently created or double-clicked rectangle.
  • The thread is not allowed to directly access any variables created in another thread, nor do any drawing. It must marshal such a request to the thread that created the variables.
• For each child window
  • Display its own toolbar and statusbar in place of the default toolbar and statusbar whenever it has focus. It should display the toolbar and statusbar in the main form, not in the child form.
  • The toolbar and statusbar should behave as they did in HW3.
  • Combine its menu with the main menu.
    • For the File menu
      • The New item should still be the one from the main menu.
      • Override the Open item with the Open for this view.
      • Add Save.
      • The Exit item should still be the one from the main menu.
    • Add the Edit menu
      • Add an option that will open the dialog that displays the database.
    • All the menu options from HW3 should work in this assignment, too.
• For the Drawing view, enable animation
  • Add a View menu with one option that will enable or disable the animation. Only enable this option when a Drawing view is active.
  • Add an animation icon to the toolbar. Toggle the icon to indicate if animation is on or off. This icon should appear only when a Drawing view is active.
• For the List view, enable printing.
  • Add printing options to the File menu. Only enable these options when a List view is active.
    • Print - Open a print dialog. If the user clicks OK, then print the document.
    • Print Preview - Open a print preview dialog.
    • Print Setup - Open a Page Setup dialog.
      • Print in Landscape mode.
  • Add a printing icon to the toolbar. This icon should appear only when a List view is active.
  • Print column headers on each page.
  • Each column of data should only fill a fixed column width. If all the data cannot be shown in a column, display ellipses (...).
  • Print 10 lines of data per page.
