Installing Network Support (TCPMAN)
For Windows 3.1 you need a copy of the TCPMAN and FTP programs. You can get these from the labs in PC413 and PC411.
- Start Windows in either PC413 or PC411
- Open the Main group
- Start the File Manager
- Select Drive P
- Open the PPP.DSK Directory
- Copy the files from the Win31 directory to a diskette in drive A: Warning! These files will take up more than 1 disk.
- Follow the instructions in the Readme.txt file
There are more files than just TCPMAN and FTP in this directory. Be sure to get TCPMAN and FTP.

Creating a Dial-Up Connection
A PPP connection is a Direct Connection to the internet, as opposed to the SLIP emulation which requires logging on to
a host computer.
Here is what you need to do to set up TCPMAN to dial the school over a PPP connection
- Click File in the menu bar
- Click Setup in the drop-down menu
In the upper half of the dialog box:
- Set IP address to 10.0.2.15
- Set Name Server to 131.94.128.2
- Leave Time Server blank
- Set domain suffix to fiu.edu
- Set MTU to 1500
- Set TCP RWIN to 2208
- Set TCP MSS to 512
- Set Demand Load Timeout to 5 secs
- Set TCP RTO MAX to 60
In the lower half of the dialog box:
- Check Internal PPP
- Select the SLIP port, it is the same number as the COM port you are using
- Select the baud rate your modem uses
- Check Hardware Handshake
- Check DCD [RLSD] check
- Click OK
You will need to exit TCPMAN and then start it again in order for your changes to take affect.

Connecting to FIU
Start TCPMAN
- Click on Dialler in the menu bar
- Click on Manual Login
- Type atdt,3483282 and hit the ENTER key
- When you see the login prompt, enter your username
- At the password prompt, enter your SOLIX password
- When you see some garbage characters on the screen, press the ESC key
- Now, minimize TCPMAN and start your browser

Disconnecting from FIU
Only do this when you are finished working on the web, as this will terminate your web connection
- Maximize TCPMAN
- Hit the ESC key
- Select Dialler from the manu bar
- Select Bye from the drop down menu
- Wait for the phone to disconnect, then close TCPMAN

Getting Software
Once you have a connection to the web, then it will be possible to download software
via an FTP program. You can obtain a free version of an FTP program for Windows95 or Windows 3.1
from the labs in PC413 or PC411.
- Start Windows in PC411 or PC413
- Open the Main group
- Select the P drive
- Select the PPP.DSK directory
- Select either Win31 or Win95, depending on what you have at home
- Copy the entire directory to the A: drive. It will take 2 disks.
When you get home, follow the instructions in the Readme.txt file on how to install the programs.
Once you have the FTP program installed, and have connected to the web, then you can run the FTP
program and download software from the web. The first piece of software to obtain will be a web browser,
either Netscape Navigator or Microsoft Internet Explorer.

Netscape FTP sites: Netscape Communications, Mountain View, California, U.S.A.
Netscape tends to be busy, so keep trying.

FTP sites for Microsoft Internet Explorer
Unfortunately, most of the US sites for this are http sites, not FTP. I tried connecting to some foreign
FTP sites, but I never succeeded. If you want Internet Explorer, then I suggest you get Netscape Navigator
first, then go to Microsoft's web page http://www.microsoft.com and download Explorer from there.
Using the browser to get more software
Once you have a browser, then you can use it instead of FTP to download files. Just click on the
file you want. If the browser can't display it, then it will ask you where you want to store it.
If the browser can display it, then you can save it to a disk, under the File menu.
