PRESIDENTS MESSAGE FOR AUG 2006

None to start still at work.

Three to read.

Well last months meeting saw the return of Chris and Jake to Miami. I would like to welcome them open arms and cold beers.

On a more somber note we say good bye, for now, to Patrick who is going to North Carolina to further his studies. I would like to thank him for all he has done for this club, for promoting homebrewing in our community and for being a friend to all of us. You will be missed but not forgotten, besides now we have a reason to visit Chapilhill.

The BOTY competition style for last month was MEADsssss, BJCP categories 24, 25 and 26. We had seven entries from all three categories with ingredients like sassafras, lemongrass, black currants, lychee and apples. The winners are in third place with a semi-sweet still Lychee mead category 25C Denise & Scott Graham. Second place with a semi-sweet petillant Black Currant mead category 25B Darryl Hickey (hey that’s me). The first place winner with sweet sparkling traditional mead our returning members Chris Balboni and Jake Miller! Next months BOTY style is India Pale Ale which is BJCP category 14. We should have a good showing do to the fact that most of us are hopheads.

To update you on the Florida Homebrew Competition Circuit the sticking point is which competition will be the culminating event, Florida Best Brewers or the Sunshine Challenge? This is being debated on the FLBREWERS forum, which is a free site set up for Florida brewers by Florida brewers so join NOW. I encourage all of you to log on to flbrewers.org and voice your opinion on the competition circuit. The opinions you submit is just that your opinion not the clubs official positions please state that in any of your posts. If you have any input and would like the club to have the same opinion as you please forward it to me for discussion, review and posting. There are other topics on the forum that my interest you and some have good information. Our club would like to be part of the Florida Homebrew Competition Circuit for several reasons but the big one is that it will directly affect the Coconut Cup. It affects when we hold it, how many entries we will get and how many judges will come from out of down.

I hope you all will have a good summer and remember August is dues month so please see Mark Kelly.

Have a cool beer, Darryl Hickey
