President's Message Jan 2006

I trust you all had a good, if not great, Christmas and New Years. With that said it is 2006 and that means a new MASH year has begun.

For January's meeting we need a list of five beers that we, the MASH membership, can brew for the up and coming National Homebrew Convention. The beers that made the biggest impact at last year's convention where unique, complex, or just different. By this I mean bourbon barrel cherry stout, lambic, honey chocolate porter, strong, smoked, and guava mead. So think about it and please e-mail the group or me so by meeting night we have a list to choose from. Please take this very seriously; there will be time to joke later. If we can think it up, we can brew it!

That leads us into the next part. Who will volunteer to brew ten gallons of these special brews? Yes that would be a lucky few that dream of stardom in the brewing circle of life. Two people at five gallons each could do this. Or we could have a couple of club brew days. THINK ABOUT IT. We need answers.

Once we have these answers the officers will work out supply procurement and shipping.

The beers will be served at two different functions. The first is Club Night, which is were 30 plus clubs serve their beers and some food to the conference attendees. It is a good time talking with eight hundred plus home and pro brewers while they taste your beers and you taste theirs. Also, the decorations used in their serving areas can get down right elaborate. The second is the Hospitality suite, which is were the club serves beers for a two hour shift to the attendees between the   events. This is straight up pouring your beers for the attendees and the sponsors in an after hours setting. The flogging will continue later.

I am asking all of our members for suggestions on topics for a fifteen-minute technical talk to be held at our monthly meetings. Ok, it can be ten minutes. There must be some aspects of brewing or meading you want to know about? One subject that is being looked at is that Yeast species can have either an obligately aerobic or a facultatively anaerobic physiology, presented by Peter. So get those suggestions in.

Ok. The January BOTY beer is Light Hybrid Beer category 6. This includes Cream Ale, Blonde Ale, Kolsch, American Wheat and Rye beers. So crack open that refrigerator dust off a few bottles and let's taste some good beers.

I will see you all on January 23 7:30pm for MASH's first meeting of the year.

And may the forced carbonization be with you. (I got the whole Star Wars video collection for Christmas).

Hoppy New Year
Darryl Jon Hickey
