PRESIDENTS MESSAGE FOR NOVEMBER

Our October meeting had a good attendance so I have been told; I was out of town so Russell conducted the meeting with great success. Thank you Russell for taking the mash paddle and running with it.

The 2008 BOTY competition suggestion sheets have been slow to show. So far I only have five sheets returned to me. Keep in mind that what you choose is what you will brew. If you do not turn a sheet in to me or e-mail me your suggestions you have no right to complain.

The BOTY style for the month was Mead BJCP category 24, 25 and 26. We had six entries with the top two places going to Scott and Denise and Russell taking the third place. It was great to see that many entries. Lets keep it up for future BOTY’s.

Coconut planning is under way, we need a cellar person or two and a supply person. If anyone is interested in helping in those capacities please contact Denise or myself. The tentative date is February 17, 2008.

Teach a Friend to Homebrew day was held on November 3. Here is the report that Russell submitted; we had a pretty successful party, and a good time was had. Things got going a little later than expected, but the day was nice so we didn't rush the all grain brew. Started about 10 am or so. Jeff and his friend Roy were first to show, and they helped out with the mash- in. Brian showed up next, and we got the pork on the BBQ. Shortly thereafter Scott, Calvin, Calvin's friend J.P., my friend Becky, Brian's brother Kevin, Peter and Aviva showed up. So I guess that brings the total to thirteen, including Yohei, Meredith and myself. Being as I was monitoring a 10 gallon all grain brew and the BBQ at the same time, I wasn't able to run the extract batch and ultimately we did not end up brewing it. But I think people learned a lot about the process and I made an effort to explain the differences and similarities between all-grain and extract, so that nobody got the impression that you needed all that equipment! Thanks

This month's BOTY style is Pilsner BJCP category 2. There are three subcategories of Pilsner 2A German Pilsner (Pils), 2B Bohemian Pilsener and 2C Classic American Pilsner. I will try to bring some commercial example to sample. You can do some homework and sample some Pilsners before November's meeting.

Gluten Free beer project for December's meeting is coming soon. If you are planning to enter a gluten free beer in the December BOTY please submit a detailed recipe to Russell and me. This is being done because the one of the judges is allergic to gluten. Some ingredients have small amounts and we do not want this to be a problem. Thank you.

FLBrewer.org. If you have not checked out the site you should. It has all the latest Florida brewing news, upcoming competitions, calendar of events and several forms to exchange information and get answers to your brewing questions.

Remember that MASH has a library of books, magazines and articles that as a MASH member you can check out. Just contact our Librarian Mark Kelly and he will bring it to the next meeting.

See you all at the next meeting and remember bring your beers for tasting, evaluation or just to drink. We have some of the best taste buds around and they are waiting to taste your beers.

Your President,

Darryl Hickey
