PRESIDENTS MESSAGE FOR OCTOBER

Our September meeting had a good attendance with ten members and three guests Jesus, Ralph and Colin.

The 2008 BOTY competition suggestion sheets need to be returned to me by the October meeting or sooner. If I can get the remaining sheets I can make the announcement so you can plan your brews. So far I only have five sheets returned to me. Keep in mind that what you choose is what you will brew. Some suggestions other then the BJCP styles are imperial any style (double malt double hops), beers wood aged any style, low alcohol, high alcohol, fortified with your favorite liquor and but not limited to freezer cleaning beers.

The BOTY style for the month was Bock BJCP category 5. We had one entry from Scott and Denise so there for I would like to congratulate them on there first place. We all need to brew more including me. We tried for the fist time the Big Brew bock that we made. It was good all the way around except for a high corn like (DMS) flavor. Looking back we may have had to boil it longer.

Coconut planning was discussed and Denise has agreed to be the chairperson for this wonderful event. Scott has been signed on as the judge coordinator. I have agreed to sponsorship chairperson. We need a cellar person or two and a supply person. If anyone is interested in helping in those capacities please contact Denise or myself. The tentative date is February 23, 2008.

Teach a Friend to Homebrew” day is November 3. As a good little homebrew club we will be holding a Teach a Friend to Homebrew event. We have two suggestions for brews for the day the first is an American Pale Ale made from extract and the second is an American Pale Ale made from all grain. We are still working on the time and place.

FLBrewer.org. If you have not checked out the site you should. It has all the latest Florida brewing news, upcoming competitions, calendar of events and several forms to exchange information and get answers to your brewing questions.

Remember that MASH has a library of books, magazines and articles that as a MASH member you can check out. Just contact our Librarian Mark Kelly and he will bring it to the next meeting.

Remember that Ron Bach is proctoring the next BJCP exam on November 10 in Orlando. If you are interested in becoming a BJCP beer judge or upgrade your ranking contact him through FLBrewer.org or call him.

This months BOTY style is Mead BJCP category 24, 25 and 26. So brew, brew and brew some more or dust off those stashed away bottle.

Gluten Free beer project for December’s meeting is coming soon. Russell and Mark have some knowledge on the subject. So feel free to contact them for help. We will be looking for a supply of sorghum extract in bulk; I will keep you updated on that.

See you all at the next meeting and remember bring your beers for tasting, evaluation or just to drink. We have some of the best taste buds around and they are waiting to taste your beers.

You're President,

Darryl Hickey
