 fullsized | websized 3/13/2007 - Not related to the dying vixen, but... This is a dead 40GB hard drive from IBM. I was intrigued by the little plastic ramp that the heads ride up onto when parked. This must be to reduce wear and tear on the head surface and platters when stopping and starting. |

Rather than replace the disk, I decided to retire the old hardware (Pentium III 700MHz, 512MB RAM) and move its data over to uzuri, my current workstation. I then renamed uzuri to vixen, since I want the name vixen to live on. (The first Linux machine in the department, which was actually the previous hardware before what was retired today, was named vixen. So I want to keep the name alive in the name of tradition.) |
