vA Short Introduction to Usenet
Newsgroups
Usenet DnNewsgroups are similar to discussion lists except that
usenet uses it own network rather that electronic mail to distribute the
information. Each host maintains all newsgroup files (the host decides how
long to save the files, usually about 2 weeks). Users read the files from
the host's database and keeps a file in their space with just the names of
subscribed groups. Users access the newsgroups using a newsreader. The
newsreader we will use is called tin. To access tin just type tin at the
unix prompt. Tin will now display all your subscribed newgroups.
(Sometime before doing this tin will display some new newsgroups. You can
decide to subscribe to them (one at a time) or type q.) As with
the other tools command information is displayed at the bottom
of the screen.
