1/17/2011 10:27 PM Prabu, Please find attached to this message the course proposal, syllabus, and justification document for the Competition Programming and Problem Solving course. We propose this as a 1-credit course that is repeatable for up to 3 credits toward the CS-1 electives category. Any credits beyond the first 3 would only count as general FIU credits. Prabu, Giri and I discussed comments I had made in an earlier email about having different expectations for students who repeat the course. I know that you expressed some reservations about that concept, so I have removed it from the justification document. I would only say that informally, a professor might have different expectations based on the students background. A student who had only taken COP3337 would not have as much ability as a student who had finished COP3530. The only alternative to this approach would be to propose two separate courses that have more or less the same syllabus. I cannot see how that would be useful. Please let me know if anything else needs to be done in order to prepare the proposal for the Undergraduate Committee. Thanks, --Kip 1/19/2011 12:31 AM Prabu, After some discussion, Giri and I have decided to propose the Competition Programming course as a 3-credit CS1 elective. You recently pointed out that the CS1 electives must be at the advanced level, so the proposed course will require COP3530 as a prerequisite. In the justification document, I included the catalog entries for two similar courses, at Carnegie-Mellon University and the University of Central Florida. In the course proposal, I used the same course number as UCF, but of course this is optional. Please find 3 documents attached. Thank you, Kip 1/19/2011 10:42 AM Prabu, Mark pointed out that CMU's competition programming course is equivalent to 2 credits at FIU. I have updated the Justification document accordingly, and attached it to this message. Kip
