Meeting called to order at 10:00AM. Attending: Ram, Shu-Ching, Mark, Xudong, Jai, Tim, Peter, Norman, Christine, Jason, Masoud M., Masoud S., Bogdan, Deng, Jinpeng, Ming. Ram welcomes faculty and promises fewer meetings. Reminds faculty of upcoming Citrix Lecture on Tue Feb 2. 10:05AM UNDERGRADUATE ISSUES 1. Math has raised concerns about removing MAD-4203 and MHF-4302 from elective list. Those courses have had limited enrollment (three CS majors have pass the courses (combined) over six years. However, the following motion was made by Mark, and seconded by Masoud. MOTION: Rewrite the CS elective requirement to rescind the removal of MAD-4203 and MHF-4302. Additionally, merge the two sets into one, requiring any three courses (possibly all math courses). The Associate Director will advise math of all changes and encourage the math department to tweak their courses to be more appealing to CS majors. Norman noted that students taking three math electives could be on the verge of not satisfying computing requirements needed for ABET, but faculty agreed to address that issue should it arise in practice, and the motion passed unanimously. 2. Significant discussion ensued concerning the introductory programming sequence for IT and CS; with some disagreement over whether COP-2210 and COP-2250 should be separate courses. Faculty suggest that curriculum committee investigate the feasibility of making COP-2250 a four-credit course with lab component. Separately, the curriculum committee is charged with addressing the syllabus, course content, and designing learning outcomes for COP-2250 and COP-3804 when viewed as a two-course sequence, with the intention being to design a course that is targeted for skills needed by the target audience in their subsequent studies. Should a four-credit COP-2250 precede changes in its content, Masoud M. volunteers so teach a cross-listed COP-2210/2250 to assess whether separate courses are still warranted. 3. Significant discussion ensued concerning the SIA course, with suggestions that included designing a project-based course, that could possibly have students make use of projects that are being implemented in the CIS-4911 course. Undergraduate committee will need to make recommendations. 4. Masoud Sadjadi presented some ideas for certificate/certification programs geared to professionals or IT majors and will do more work over the next few months to assess viability and feasibility. 11:20AM GRADUATE ISSUES 1. The proposed MSTN program change that features five required courses, one focus group, and three free electives was discussed and approved without changes and without objection. 2. Shu-Ching presented applicant statistics for graduate programs. 3. There was discussion on replacing required courses in the PhD program. Although no decisions were made, COP-5621 is likely to be removed, and recommendations on whether to keep CEN-5011 or remove it and go to a four-course core are referred back to the graduate committee. 12:00PM Meeting adjourned. NEXT MEETING: Tentatively Fri Feb 10, to discuss recruitment, third year review, and pending graduate/undergraduate issues.
