Subject: Re: UGC meeting: Mon 11/21 at 11am in ECS-243 From: Masoud Sadjadi Date: 11/22/2016 2:27 PM To: Prabakar CC: Rick Blazek , Debra Lee Davis , Tim Downey , "P. McDermott-Wells" , Trevor Cickovski , Mark Weiss , Jai Navlakha , Michael Robinson Dear UGC Members, Many thanks for your time yesterday. I really enjoyed our conversation regarding the VIP courses. As requested I am providing a short description of the VIP Junior Course and justification for the changes being requested. Requested changes and justifications: Requested Change: Increase the number of credits from 2 to 3. Justification: The load of this course is more than 2 credits and 3 credits is the right number. Requested Change: Change the course number from IDS 3962 to IDS 3963. Justification: To reflect that the course has three credits, it would be best if the course number changes from IDS 3962 to IDS 3963. Requested Change: Adding guidelines for approving this course as a CS elective. Justification: The VIP junior course (IDS 3963) is an interdisciplinary independent research course that allows FIU junior students to work under the supervision of a faculty member at FIU and participate in an interdisciplinary research project led by the faculty member, hereafter called the faculty supervisor. This course is very similar to an independent study with respect to getting permission from the faculty supervisor, but has its own outcomes and students taking this course must participate in an interdisciplinary research project. Any student at FIU may take this course as a free elective, as long as there are no other restrictions and limitations imposed by their home department. However, to make sure that when a computer science student wants to take this course and count it as a CS elective, the rigor of the course must satisfy the FIU SCIS standards. The added guidelines provide assurance that all the involved parties, including the students, academic advisors, faculty supervisors, and VIP coordinator are all on the same page and are aware of the FIU SCIS requirements for this course to be approved as a CS elective course. Please see the revised version attached to this email and should you have any questions, please do feel free to contact me. As I mentioned before, this is an urgent request and I really hope that the requested changes to be approved by next Monday by UGC and SCIS faculty so that this can be sent to the College Curriculum Committee that will meet next Tuesday. Many thanks for all your great support. Please review the Junior course soon and provide your feedback so that I can solicit faculty input prior to CEC Curriculum meeting (Tue, Nov 29th). At the next UGC meeting (11/28 10:30am - 12:30pm), we will consolidate the recommendations on VIP Senior course (for the presentation in the next faculty meeting). Also, Mark will bring a new topic to the agenda for discussion.
