Subject: [UGC: transfer students and COP 3337] From: "William B Feild, Jr." Date: 10/2/2018 4:58 PM To: "Nagarajan Prabakar" Prabu, We can discuss this in the next UGC meeting... Bill ---------------------------- Original Message ---------------------------- Subject: transfer students and COP 3337 From: "William B Feild, Jr." Date: Thu, September 27, 2018 5:02 pm To: "Nagarajan Prabakar" -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Prabu, I polled my COP 3337 students in both classes. Of the 65+ students, I have at least 20+ students that transferred into FIU having taken an introductory programming course elsewhere. Furthermore, some of the students, FIU and transfers, took that course more than a year ago – one as many as five years ago. Of the 20+, I have students from: 10-12 students from Barry, MDC, FIT, FMU (in-state) Barry : CS 231 – Python MDC: COP 1334/1337 – C++, COP 2210 – Java FIT: CSE 1001/1002 – Java 4 students from out of state – mostly Python, some Java 4 student took AP CS in high school – Java or JavaScript or Snap (?) - not sure of their AP test scores 1 student took Java in Cuba Thus, just from my classes, I have almost a third that may or may not be ready for COP 3337. The Java students should be okay, maybe the JavaScript and C++, but the Python, Snap and others – not so much. AP CS depends a lot on the school and instructor, but also the score the student received on the CS AP test. And any student that took those courses, or even COP 2210 here, more than a year ago is also likely to struggle in COP 3337. Share as you see fit – we can discuss further at our next meeting.
