UGC Meeting-12: 3/4/19 10:30am - 12:30pm CASE-235 Present: Bill, Pat, *Prabu, Rick, Tim, Trevor; Cristy, Erica, Geoff, Jason, Ruth Restructuring goals: - provide flexibility (additional elective course options) for students to widen their skills, - streamline course dependency chain, - and to fulfill the latest ABET guidelines Ref: https://users.cs.fiu.edu/~prabakar/ugc/2018-19/restructure/ * replace CDA-3103 & CDA-4101 with a combined 3-credit course (Computer Architecture) - finalize textbook (cda31034101merged_v3.docx) * change prereq for CEN-4010: CGS-3095 and COP3337 (removing COP-3530 and COP-4710 from pre-req) - ensure basic data structures are included in Programming II with common FExam * change prereq for MAD-3512: COP-3530 (instead of COT-3541) - UGC supports this change * move the following core courses to elective courses: COT-3541, MAD-3512, COP-4710, COP-4555, and CNT-4713 - UGC approves this change. In future, we need to redesign COP-4338 (Systems Programming, asynchronous prog, OS fundamentals); create a new course (webservices, database concepts); move COP-4610 (OS-II) to Systems elective group. * group all elective courses into the following three elective groups (course list in each group needs to be examined) Students are required to take at least 3-credits from each elective group. Foundations: COP-4555, COT-3541(requires redesign), MAD-3512, CAP-4506, COP-4534, COT-4521, MAD-3401, MAD-3305, MAD-4203, MHF-4302 Systems: COP-4710, CNT-4713, CAP-4453, CDA-4625, CEN-4083, COP-4520, COP-4604, COP-4722 Applications: CAP-4104, CAP-4630, CAP-4641, CAP-4710, CAP-4770, CEN-4021, COP-4226, CEN-4072 - UGC supports this proposal. * add a 1-credit conference community engagement course as an elective (Applications group) - UGC supports this new course * strengthen programming courses (COP-2210, COP-2250, COP-3337, COP-3804) by adding a 0-credit mandatory lab (?recitation) for each course (COP-2210 credits will be reduced to 3) with a common final exam for all sections of each of these four courses. Additionally, rename all programming courses with suitable course titles. - introduce 0-credit common lab/recitation for both COP-2210 and COP-2250 (as pilot) and after its impact, adopt 0-credit lab/recitation for COP-3337 and COP-3804. One TA will oversee each combined recitation that will be supported by tutors (Stars and ASI) and possibly LAs. - Prepare a detailed list of Learning Outcomes for all four programming courses - For students changing majors, they need to pass the common final exam. Next meeting: Mon 3/18/19 at 10:30am in CASE-235
