Basic Course Information
The ultimate goal of networks is to effectively move packets. To do this, you have to create the network, plan the network, configure it, figure out the policies you want to support, run it, and figure out what to do when problems arise. However, network management remains the least understood aspect of networking. Managers of today’s enterprise and carrier networks face great challenges, as they need to manage a variety of devices, protocols and mechanisms, to meet a diverse set of goals in performance, security, availability and costs. This course provides students with a comprehensive view of the network management problem, including its concepts, scope, challenges, and techniques. We will study the network management concepts in concrete applications and scenarios such as MPLS, VPN, VLAN, etc. As a highlight of this course, we will also spend significant amount of time studying emerging networking technologies such as Software Defined Networking, to better prepare students for managing future IT infrastructures.
This class does require python programming. Depending on the need, a few lectures of Python will be provided. However, the programming is always related to this class’s networking topic.

Identify and compare approaches to automatically managing networks

Analyze network problems to determine the root cause and relevant layer

Describe how network problem discovery can be automated

Identify and describe common network problems

Explore and analyze classic and recent approaches to solving common network problems

Practice managing a small-scale network, including writing scripts

Apply recent tools to managing a small-scale network, including some programming

Develop research skills related to finding and reading current literature

Write a review of current literature on an aspect of network management

Select a technical paper and summarize it for the class in a brief presentation
Pre-requisites
A solid knowledge of networking (e.g., layered Internet architecture, basic switching and routing concepts). Students should have taken a general computer networking course such as TCN 5030. Basic programming knowledge is recommended for the project. If you are not sure you meet the requirements, please feel free to talk to me.
Textbook
There is no required textbook for this class, but students are expected to do their own research online, using Wikipedia, RFCs, and other technical documentation.

You are all encouraged to visit me during office hours or email me with questions. Class participation is very welcomed and will be rewarded. Do not hesitate to ask questions in the class, in most, if not all cases, the entire class will benefit from the answers received (what you may think as a silly or naïve question may in fact be a genuine question that also other students in the class may have).
When you email us make sure you include [TCN-6430] in your email’s subject line in order for the email to receive the proper attention. If you don’t include it, my mail filter will most likely discard your email.
We will use piazza for in-class communication, so you are welcome to post questions there. All enrolled students will be added to the class piazza. If you haven’t received invitation email, please let me know.

Project Paper Requirements
No copyright violations:
- You must to re-draw all figures (any unmodified figures need permissions from copyright holders)
- You must to summarize all ideas in your own words
- Cannot copy any part of text or figure unmodified
- Short quotes ok if properly referenced
Any infringement will result in forfeiture of grades even after graduation.
