ABOUT

Samira Pouyanfar is a Ph.D. candidate at the School of Computing and Information Sciences (SCIS), Florida International University (FIU), Miami, USA. She has 8+ years of research and development experiences in computer science. She received the Master degree in Computer Engineering from Sharif University of Technology (SUT) in 2012. Her research interests include data science, data mining, machine learning, image, audio, and video processing, big data, healthcare, and information retrieval. She has published over 20 research papers in international journals and conference proceedings. She is currently working as a research assistant in the Distributed Multimedia Information System (DMIS) lab at FIU under supervision of Prof. Shu-Ching Chen. She is working on several projects, such as image/video processing using deep learning, Multimedia event detection, and Florida Public Hurricane Loss Model (FPHLM).

    • Designed and developed a new deep learning architecture to detect objects from images in an efficient and low power manner.
    • Integrated Squeeznet and Faster RCNN techniques to generate a very fast low power object detection model.
    • Participated in the Low-Power Image Recognition Challenge (LPIRC) competition in conjunction with CVPR 2017.

    • Leading the Insurance Loss Model (ILM) component in software engineering team.

    Medical and healthcare data analysis (Jan 2015 - May 2017):

    • Surveyed more than 150 publications in Health Informatics in the Big Data.
    • Developed a Circulating Tumor Cells (CTC) detection from images captured on microfilter from whole blood using image segmentation and random forest.
    • Developed a gene expression analysis on human vascular diseases using Random Forest.
