Description:

In-depth analysis of innovation development, adoption processes in educational organizations: schools, universities, training centers.

Reflection:

For me, Diffusions of Innovations was one of the most challenging courses in my program. I had not realized how much more easily I learn from instruction with strong practical applications incorporated into the assignments.  Many of the assignments here seemed to be looking for evidence of theory in action. Valuable learning, but very difficult for me, and I struggled to immerse myself in the content and stay connected.

During this struggle, there were glimmers of light and moments of “ah-ha” as I began to see how understanding innovation diffusion patterns could help me better integrate technology with learning. In particular, I found our assignment "Who’s Your Leader" to be very enlightening.  I was fascinated to examine my staff, people I work closely with on a daily basis, as they revealed their functional leaders. Having this insight into my staff will help me infuse innovations into my group and the department.

It was fascinating to realize how many times there are unintended consequences as result of a technological innovation. As “change agents” we try to anticipate outcomes, and consider positive consequences, but it is easy to overlook possible undesired consequences. Giving consideration to this issue helped me to realize the importance of thinking beyond an implementation in an effort to better anticipate these undesired consequences.

Since this course was largely theoretical in nature, I was relieved when we were able to do some practical work with the Concerns Based Adoption Model. This assignment helped me pull much of the research studied in Dr. Everett Rogers’ into clearer perspective. I enjoyed analyzing my department’s course management system, and was able to bring to bear several new insights to continuing improving that service for my faculty.

Honestly, it was a relief to have this course behind me; however, I felt proud of my work and satisfied that I had gathered new skills in the process.
